Notes:
And now, some lengthy notes on the Entertaining Angels mix, possibly of little interest to anyone other than me...
This version of Angel Eyes from Sinatra at the Sands is my favorite of a favorite song. He portrays such vulnerability and loneliness in that exclusive setting. And you can hear the glasses tinkling as he sings "Drink up all you people... the drink and the laugh's on me." Anyway, I know some don't understand my Sinatra obsession. Honestly, I used to dislike him myself. I've just grown to appreciate his voice. Okay, enough justification.
Track 2 is a heartbreaking piece of music from a scene in Leaving Las Vegas in which Ben is told by Sera to 'Get Out.' This score was probably the first jazz album I bought, and it's a good one. Figgis also composed music for his other movies, including One Night Stand which is also excellent. I thought Get Out was a good follow-up to Angel Eyes, because a version of that song by Sting is also on the Leaving Las Vegas soundtrack.
Amy Corriea is one of those artists we stumbled on at Mountain Stage. Her album, Carnival Love, is one of our favorites, and I've included her songs on many previous mixtapes. Another favorite song from the album is Blind River Boy, which Corriea wrote about the tragic death of Jeff Buckley. I admit that this tape is pretty depressing... I guess I'm focusing on the tragedy of Dorothy Day's earlier life. This song was chosen to represent the meeting of Dorothy and Peter - angels colliding.
Machusla is an old Irish ballad, this version taken from the soundtrack to Michael Collins. It's a favorite song of mine, and I included it on one of my earliest mix tapes - Life, which I distributed to several online friends at the time.
A Little Princess was one of the first cds I bought, before I even had a cd player. I loved the music that much, and still do. Patrick Doyle is my favorite composer of film music and I've used his cues as a theme through this tape. I think he captures and provokes emotions very well - for example, track included here is intended to portray sadness and compassion I felt were the major emotions of the Dorothy Day movie.
Sweets to the Sweet includes some beautiful melodies from Hamlet, including the music for In Pace, a song written by Doyle and performed by Placido Domingo. I was going to include that track too, but I didn't want to be too repetitive, and In Pace is on another tape I made recently.
As Time Goes By is just a classic song, I think it captures a certain era very well. And Billie's voice makes any song more special, I think. I'm so glad to have this song, it's a rare find. I got it from ebay on a promotional cd for a line of furniture.
Take the A Train... well, I would've liked to include more jazz tracks, and having to choose just one instrumental, I couldn't cut this. I think it's one of the best pieces of music ever written. Many of these tracks were intended to create a sense of the time, an era when the clubs were swinging and the people starving. Well, I guess time hasn't changed that much.
The next track may seem like a strange choice, but I really love this song, and it's the only version I have. I don't think Kirsten Dunst would make it as a pop singer, but her voice suits this music very well. After you've Gone is taken from The Cat's Meow, an interesting and underrated movie which also starred Cary Elwes, Eddie Izzard, Edward Herrmann, Jennifer Tilly & Joanna Lumley.
Johnny Hartman's voice is incredible, and not enough people have heard it. I love the lyrics to Lush Life...
I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life...
From jazz and cocktails.
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distant gay traces
That used to be there you could see where they’d been washed away
By too many through the day...
Twelve o’clock tales.
Then you came along with your siren of song
To tempt me to madness!
I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me.
Ah yes! I was wrong...
Again,
I was wrong.
Life is lonely again,
And only last year everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore.
A week in paris will ease the bite of it,
All I care is to smile in spite of it.
I’ll forget you, I will
While yet you are still burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush,
Stifling those who strive.
I’ll live a lush life in some small dive...
And there I’ll be, while I rot
With the rest of those whose lives are lonely, too..
I just thought it fit.
There was a version of My Baby Just Cares for Me in the movie, but nobody does this song like Nina Simone. This was an attempt to capture some of the lighter moments, as was Pure Shores, taken from the soundtrack to The Beach. I think it captures the sense of freedom you get by the ocean, the joy. The Celia Bartoli track was featured on The Sopranos, it's just a wonderful haunting performance of music by Vivaldi.
On to side 2
Sarah McLachlan's Angel is one of my favorite songs of the past decade. It's interesting how this song can be used to evoke feelings of love (City of Angels) or heartache (Dawson's Creek). I guess the feeling here depends on the listener.
Miss Sarajevo is essentially a war protest written by Bono, The Edge and Brian Eno, calling themselves The Passengers. I think these lyrics too deserve to be pasted here:
Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear
Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown
Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colours
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there time to be a beauty queen
Here she comes
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown
( It's said that a river
Finds the way to the sea
And like the river
You shall come to me
Beyond the borders
And the thirsty lands
You say that as a river
Like a river...
Love shall come
Love...
And I'm not able to pray anymore
And I cannot hope in love anymore
And I cannot wait for love anymore)
Is there a time for tying ribbons
A time for Christmas trees
Is there a time for laying tables
And the night is set to freeze
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear
Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown
Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colours
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca

The Prayer of Saint Francis is one I remember from my youth. It was spoken in the movie by the character of Peter, and from the Princess Diana tribute album, here's a version sung by Sinead O'Connor. I think and hope that this captures the motivation behind the Catholic Worker movement, a desire to do God's will by showing love and mercy and kindness to our fellow humans being.
Hymn to Her... I think Dorothy was a mother to many, and I hoped the person this tape was made for would appreciate a song about that...
I dress as your daughter
When the moon becomes round
You be my mother
When everything’s gone
And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Somethings change
Some stay the same
When the moon becomes round
You be my mother
When everything’s gone
And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Somethings change
Some stay the same
God by Tori captures the frustration some of us feel with the Supreme Being. Even the devout sometimes doubt. "God sometimes
you just don't come through. Do you need a woman to look after you?" Whether we believe or not, I couldn't ignore a major player in the Dorothy Day story.
I had to include a song from Johnny Cash's American IV cd, and Bridge over Troubled Water is a song that fit with the characters I'm trying to represent. His voice on this whole cd is just so vulnerable, I think you can feel the pain and the hope and the life lived.
I Saw no Shadow of Another Parting is an aria taken from the Great Expectations soundtrack. It was just one of those songs that came to my mind as I watched the movie. I like Patrick Doyle track that follows it, another brief spark of hope and joy. This score especially displays the talents of Doyle - opera, contemporary dance, big band jazz, classical guitar, vocalizations by Tori Amos and Miriam Stockley.
La Mama Morta is certainly one of the saddest pieces of music ever performed. This Callas version was used so effectively in Philadelphia, and again having to choose from several classical & opera pieces, I couldn't leave this out.
The music from Schindler's List again was meant to represent the suffering and compassion that were such a big part of the Catholic Worker movement. Its inclusion is more interesting after learning that the CW leaders didn't appear to take much interest in the holocaust, so perhaps now it also represents hypocrisy.
The movie ends with Dorothy Day singing Amazing Grace, so I thought it should be included. This version by Laura Love starts off slow and deferential, but soon gets swinging. And the final song speaks for itself:
This land is your land,
This land is my land,
From California
To the New York Island,
From the redwood forest,
To the Gulf stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.
As I was walking,
That ribbon of highway,
I saw above me
That endless skyway,
I saw below me
That golden valley.
This land was made for you and me.
I've roamed and rambled
And I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
The sun comes shining
As I was strolling
The wheat fields waving
And the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me
As I was walkin'
I saw a sign there
And that sign said no trespassin'
But on the other side
It didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!
In the squares of the city
In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office
I see my people
And some are grumblin'
And some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.
Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking
That freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land was made for you and me
